New patient portal: St. Franziskus-Stiftung Münster cooperates with Cologne-based digital healthcare pioneer m.Doc

Patient portal meets criteria of the Hospital Future Act (KHZG)/Direct access to own data creates security, transparency and self-determination for patients

Cologne, 23.08.2022. As one of the first hospital associations in Germany, the St. Franziskus-Stiftung Münster relies on the Smart Clinic patient portal of the Cologne-based digital healthcare pioneer m.Doc, which fulfills all criteria of the Krankenhauszukunftsgesetz (KHZG). Most importantly, Smart Clinic provides patients with access to all the health information relevant to them before, during and after a hospital stay at a Franziskus Stiftung clinic.

With the services of the smart application, patients are actively and self-determinedly involved in the processes of their hospital stay. “Through this primarily seamless communication, we create trust and transparency among patients, relieve the burden on our clinic staff and can even positively support the treatment outcome,” Dr. Daisy Hünefeld, CEO Franziskus Foundation, is pleased about the advantages of the patient portal.

Simplifying time-consuming processes

With the help of the Smart Clinic, patient admission begins at home: some time-consuming pre-hospital processes, such as making individual appointments and therapy arrangements, recording questionnaires and admission documents, or special patient needs – for example, for nutrition, medication or education – can be handled before the actual hospital stay. The actual admission process on site is thus made much more efficient – creating satisfaction among patients and staff.

And even during their hospital stay, patients need different information at different times: From the introduction of the nursing and medical teams to menus, questionnaires, ward procedures, consultation times and appointments to individual exercises – patients can always view important information relating to their stay with the Smart Clinic patient portal.

Open information architecture and data security

“In all our developments, we attach great importance to interoperability – that is, open architecture and open interfaces. That’s why an inpatient stay with our Smart Clinic patient portal begins long before the patient actually enters the clinic and doesn’t even have to end with discharge. Patients can continue to be cared for, for example, with a view to follow-up medication or rehabilitation measures,” says Admir Kulin, CEO m.Doc GmbH, explaining some of the advantages of Smart Clinic.

“Of course, our patient portal meets the criteria laid down by politicians in the KHZG, especially with regard to IT and data security,” says Dr. Nils Brüggemann, Chairman of the Franziskus Foundation. This was another reason for choosing the m.Doc solution, because interoperability, i.e. the continuous integration of internal and external services with internationally recognized standards and the creation of cross-sector telemedical network structures, is an important criterion for the future viability of a patient portal.

Project implementation

Programming and implementation of the patient portal will take place step by step in the coming months, so that the “Smart Clinic” will already be available in the first hospitals of the Franziskus Foundation in the fourth quarter of 2022.
