Co-operation projects

Project duration: 2023 – 2026

Simplifying digital self-management for cancer patients: this is the goal of the DigiCare joint research project. DigiCare – a pioneering collaboration between the University Hospital Essen (ÄöR), the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Essen study centre of the Hamburger Fernschule and m.Doc – aims to improve transsectoral, interprofessional care structures through innovative digital solutions. This three-year project focuses on the needs of oncology patients to create tailored, needs-based support. The aim is to develop a pioneering digital solution in two iterative stages.

Project duration: 2021 – 2026

The aim of the ‘SmartHospital.NRW’ project is to use artificial intelligence to provide better patient care, relieve the burden on hospital staff and make medical processes more efficient. Under the direction of the University Hospital Essen, scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS, RWTH Aachen University and TU Dortmund University, as well as partners GSG and m.Doc, are developing concepts and solutions for hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia to drive their own digitalisation and develop into ‘smart hospitals’. The constantly growing volume of health data makes it possible to develop intelligent and personalised applications for early health detection, diagnostics, treatment and aftercare. AI-based systems, in particular, hold enormous potential, which SmartHospital.NRW aims to leverage and make available to hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Integrated care model for people with cancer who have a migration background and language barriers.

Project duration: 01.10.2023 - 30.09.2026

People with a migration background (MH) who face language barriers in care due to insufficient knowledge of the German language face particular challenges when admitted to hospital for cancer treatment. Current care is often insufficiently prepared for this. The aim of the project is to implement a care-led integrative care model for this target group in various areas of oncology care; this is being done at the University Hospital of Cologne as an example. A structured information management and aftercare programme throughout the entire process of admission, treatment and after discharge is intended to increase the patients' knowledge, health literacy and satisfaction, as well as the quality of care. The primary target criterion is the need for support and problem solving among the study participants.
